“Picking up where music television dropped off, CLIPTIP has, since late 2004, remains one of the strongest pioneering forces behind the dissemination of music video through the internet. Despite labels and broadcasters turning their backs on this vital artist marketing vehicle, the appetite for music video had not diminished. In the early days, CLIPTIP would panhandle directly with directors and production companies to upload their reels online, compiling quicktime links for a growing underground of music video seekers with few viewing outlets. Then YouTube emerged, and with it a malestrom of user uploaded music videos flooded the web. More music video blogs appeared, fueled by social media tools, fandom and music television favouring reality TV crib pimping. At first, YouTube lacked quality, and Cliptip continued, albeit in a more niche segment, to focus on seeking out high quality links to innovative artists and visionary directors. Then Google bought YouTube, starting improving delivery, and labels started suing based on copyright violation.

Music fans are not born, they are nurtured. Give them quality goods and they will reward you with loyalty. Give them with means, and they will sing the praises of their favourite artists. Exploit them with 75% filler, and they with download piecemeal. Insult them with formulaic pop product, and they will feel no remorse stealing it. Gouge them on prices, and they will pirate en mass. There is a golden rule in advertising: don’t mock your target market. In the music industry, they go a step further: they sue them. Piracy is not the reason for the music industry’s collapse. It is the response. Cheaper and fewer music videos. Unchallenging, disposable formula pop. Misses outnumber cherry-picked hits. Inflated pricing. Commoditized, unpackaged, unmarketed music. There are few modern day superstars because they are no longer in the business of making them.

Cliptip is and remains a part-time passion project of one individual. Thanks for watching.”
